All about the
Orff Schulwerk Association of South Australia

The Orff Schulwerk Association of South Australia is a professional organisation of classroom teachers who use the creative teaching approach for music and movement which was developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. We are joined by our belief that learning about music – learning to sing and play, to hear and understand, to move and create – should be an active and joyful experience.

Our mission is:

  • To promote, support, encourage and inspire classroom music teachers through practical workshops and conferences.

  • To disseminate and publish information on classroom music using the Orff Schulwerk approach.

  • To promote a forum for Association members to exchange ideas on the teaching of classroom music and other forms of expression and practical application of the expressive arts.

What we do:

  • The Association organises workshops for teachers each term. They are usually one day workshops on Saturdays. Annual state conferences are been held over two days (Friday and Saturday). These conferences are practical, allowing teachers to gain hands-on experience of activities which they may then use, with or without adapting them for their own situation.  Participants are involved in sessions which give experience in playing classroom instruments, singing and movement.  Presenters are experienced music teachers, mostly from local schools. We also have presenters from interstate and overseas.  The conferences cater for educators, working in Early Childhood through to Upper Primary. Participants include classroom teachers, music specialists, studio teachers, and tertiary students.  Detailed notes are provided for each conference. Teachers’ resources are also available for sale.

  • We also conduct Levels Courses  (1 + 2) annually with leading Orff Schulwerk experts. Levels Courses provide the participant with knowledge and skill development, as well as experience in using the Orff Schulwerk processes ie Pedagogy, Orchestration, Movement, Recorder and vocal Technique

  • We also recruit new presenters from those who have participated in Levels Course (1) and run training courses to facilitate their transition into this role.

What we publish:

  • A member magazine is published once a term.

  • Conference booklets are published four times a year. Some back copies of conference booklets are available at each workshop.

When we meet:

  • Conferences are held once in each school term.  Committee members meet 2-3 times a term.
